Our approach to privacy

Days In Color is a personal app for recording the days of your life in color. We built it on a simple belief: your data belongs to you. This Privacy Policy explains what information the app and this website handle, why, and the control you have over it. By using Days In Color, you agree to the practices described here.

Days In Color is provided by SwiftVisions LLC ("we", "us", or "our"). It is available for Mac, with iPhone and iPad planned for a later release.

In short

  • Everything you record stays on your device. The app has no account and no sync, and what you record is never sent to us or anyone else.
  • To help us improve the app, it shares anonymous usage information, such as which screens and features are used. It never includes what you record, and you can turn it off in Settings.
  • We never sell your data. The app contains no advertising and does not track you across other apps or websites.
  • Face ID, Touch ID and your passcode are handled entirely by your device. We never see them.
  • Your data only leaves your device when you choose to: by exporting a backup or sharing a statistics PDF.

Data you create in the app

The heart of Days In Color is the content you create: canvases, their colors and scores, the days you record, bonus days, and the notes you write. You can also add a photo as a canvas cover. This content powers the app for you and you alone.

We do not sell this content, we do not use it for advertising, and we do not use it to build a profile of you. We cannot see it: it never reaches us.

Where your data is stored

Your content is stored only on your device, inside the app's private storage. Days In Color does not use a cloud service for your content, does not sync between devices, and never sends your content to us or to anyone else. Your device's own backups (such as an iCloud or computer backup of your iPhone, or Time Machine on your Mac) may include the app's data, under your device and Apple's settings.

Some canvases can be marked Local Only. Because the app has no sync today, all canvases stay on your device; the setting records your wish that a canvas never be synced if sync is offered in the future.

Information we collect

The app collects no personal information and nothing you record. We aim to handle as little as possible:

  • Your content: never. Your canvases, colors, days, notes and photos are never sent anywhere. There is no account, and the app does not ask for your name, email address or location.
  • Anonymous usage analytics, unless you turn it off. The app shares which screens and features are used, so we can see what works and what to improve. See Anonymous usage analytics below for exactly what this includes.
  • App settings. Preferences such as default period, layout and App Lock timing are stored on your device only.
  • Diagnostics, if you allow it. If you choose to share analytics through your device settings, Apple may provide us with anonymous crash reports and aggregate usage statistics to help us fix problems. These do not identify you and do not include your content.
  • Messages you send us. When you use the contact form on this website, we receive the name, email address, subject and message you provide so we can reply.

Anonymous usage analytics

To understand how Days In Color is used and where to improve it, the app uses Google Analytics for Firebase, provided by Google, to record anonymous usage events.

What is shared:

  • Which screens are opened, such as the Statistics page or the Journal.
  • Which features are used and how, described only in general terms: for example, that a day was recorded and whether it had a note, that the view was switched to Month, or that a setting was changed and to what option.
  • Rough counts in ranges, such as "3 to 5 canvases", never exact contents.
  • General technical information that the analytics service records automatically, such as the app version, device type, operating system, language and approximate country, and when the app is opened.

What is never shared: the names of your canvases or colors, your notes, the days you record, your scores, your photos, or anything else you create. Nothing about a protected canvas is shared. Face ID, Touch ID and your passcode are never involved.

How it's identified: the analytics service uses a random identifier created by the app on your device. It isn't linked to your name, email address or Apple Account, and we don't use it to identify you. The app does not collect your device's advertising identifier, does not use analytics for advertising, and does not track you across other companies' apps or websites.

Your choice: you can turn this off at any time in Settings › Privacy › Share anonymous usage data. When you turn it off, the app stops sharing usage information straight away and clears the analytics identifier stored on your device.

Google processes this information on our behalf as a service provider. You can read how Google handles it in Google's Privacy Policy and Privacy and Security in Firebase.

Face ID, Touch ID and passcodes

You can protect individual canvases, or the whole app with App Lock. Unlocking uses your device's Face ID, Touch ID, Mac password or passcode through Apple's system prompt. The app only learns whether unlocking succeeded. Your biometric data and passcode never leave the secure hardware of your device and are never available to us or to the app.

Photos

If you choose a photo as a canvas cover, you pick it with the system photo picker, and only that photo is shared with the app. The app does not get access to the rest of your photo library. The photo is stored with the canvas on your device.

Backups and sharing

You can export a backup of the canvases you choose and save it wherever you like, such as your Files app, a folder on your Mac, or a service you pick. Backups are standard JSON files and are not encrypted: anyone who has the file can read everything in it, including canvases that are password protected in the app. The app warns you about this before exporting, and asks you to unlock protected canvases first. Please keep backups somewhere private.

You can also share a PDF of your statistics using your device's share sheet. The PDF contains what you see on the Statistics page for the canvases you selected. Where it goes is up to you, and once shared it is subject to the privacy practices of the app or person you shared it with.

We never receive your backups or shared PDFs.

Sharing and disclosure

We do not sell personal information, and because the app does not send us your content, we have none of it to share. For the limited information we do handle (anonymous usage analytics and messages sent through this website), we may disclose it only in these situations:

  • Service providers. Trusted vendors who help us operate the app and this website, acting only on our instructions: Google, which provides the app's anonymous usage analytics, and the services that run this website and deliver contact form messages to us.
  • Legal requirements. When we are required to do so by law, or to protect the rights, safety and property of our users or the public.
  • Business transfers. In connection with a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, in which case we will continue to protect that information consistent with this policy.

Data retention and deletion

Your content stays on your device until you delete it. Deleting a day, color or canvas in the app removes it. Archiving a canvas only hides it from the main list; it stays on your device until you delete it. Deleting the app removes all of its data from that device. Backups you exported are separate files that you control and delete yourself.

Anonymous usage analytics are kept by the analytics service for a limited time, no longer than 14 months, and then deleted automatically. We only look at them in aggregate.

Messages you send through the contact form are kept only as long as needed to respond to you and keep a record of our correspondence.

Your rights and choices

You are always in control of your data:

  • Access and edit. All of your content is visible and editable in the app at any time.
  • Delete. You can delete individual days, colors or canvases, or remove the app and all of its data.
  • Export. You can export a backup of your canvases and import it again, on the same or another device.
  • Protect. You can lock individual canvases or the whole app behind Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.
  • Usage analytics. You can turn anonymous usage analytics off, or back on, at any time in Settings › Privacy.
  • Diagnostics. You can turn sharing of analytics and diagnostics on or off in your device settings.

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the GDPR or CCPA, including the right to access, correct or delete personal information we hold about you. Since we don't hold your in-app content, these mainly apply to anonymous usage analytics and to messages you've sent us. To make a request, please use our contact form.

Children's privacy

Days In Color is not directed to children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal information through this website, please contact us so we can remove it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect changes in the app, our practices or the law. If a future version of the app adds features such as sync, we will update this policy before they are available. When we make material changes, we will update the date at the top of this page.
